Tubatse – Limpopo Department of Local Government and Housing has embarked on a road show aimed at informing poor communities how they can access free basic services and save energy.
The department’s MEC Maite Nkoana-Mashabane said the free basic services and energy saving road show will cover the rural areas of certain municipalities in the province including Makhado, Lephalale, Giyani and Polokwane.
“We want to create awareness around government interventions which are aimed at members of our society who are less fortunate in life,” said Ms Nkoana-Mashabane.
The road show was officially launched at Praktiseer, which falls under the Greater Tubatse Municipality, last week and it is set to continue until month end.
The free basic services programme is a nationwide initiative where municipalities offer rebates on services such as water and electricity rendered to the poor citizens who are either not working or are not earning enough to cover the services.
Every month these households receive 50kWh of electricity from their respective municipalities.
In Limpopo, all municipalities have adopted the indigent policies and qualifying beneficiaries are often requested to register at their respective municipalities.
Ms Nkoana-Mashabane also briefed members of the community about the importance of saving energy, a topic which forms part of Premier Sello Moloto’s Mayors Forum.
The forum has developed a ten point plan on energy saving and it includes efficient lighting, extended operation of back up, diesel generators.
Departmental spokesperson Clayson Monyela said the road show will also encourage residents about water heating and electricity management.
“The MEC will also talk about the national housing specification for water heating and building standards, revision of load shedding protocols,” said Mr Monyela.
In the recent weeks, Ms Nkoana-Mashabane went on a house-to-house campaign to verify the occupants of the government’s low cost houses across the province. - BuaNews
