| ZIMBABWE: All set for February elections by Admin 7th January 2008
The parliamentary constituency boundaries, as set out by the commission, will tie up with the number of new seats set for Parliament. The House of Assembly has been increased from 150 members to 210 while the number of Senate seats increase from 66 to 93. More than 2 000 local government wards have been set. The main parties set to contest the polls are the ruling Zanu-PF and the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). The two parties are currently engaged in talks, brokered by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and led by South African President Thabo Mbeki, to create a conducive climate for free and fair elections. President Robert Mugabe has been leader of this Southern African nation of 15 million people since independence in 1980 while the MDC was formed in 1999 by workers and trade unions. In 2000, the West imposed economic sanctions on Zimbabwe following the country’s differences with former colonial master Britain over redistribution of farm lands held by British settlers to landless Zimbabweans. - BuaNews |

| Senior Member | Zim Today: Friday 14 December: Mugabe to run for sixth term No vote allowed on candidacy at Zanu-PF meeting Amidst familiar late-night scenes of dancing, hand-clapping, ululating and cheering, President Robert Mugabe yesterday steamrollered through any opposition to be endorsed as the ruling party Zanu-PF candidate in Zimbabwe's presidential election in March. Sunday, January 6, 2008 Zimbabwe Electoral Authorities Rule out Delay to Poll Harare - Electoral authorities in Zimbabwe have finished marking out constituencies ahead of elections due in March and have ruled out any delay to the watershed polls, reports said Sunday. 'The focus is on the elections being held in March as this is when the presidential election will be held,' said George Chiweshe, the chairman of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission. He said there was no lawful reason to delay the elections, which will include polls to choose a new president, parliament, senate and local councillors and mayors. The two factions of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), which have been in delicate talks with President Robert Mugabe's ruling ZANU-PF party, have been pushing for a delay to the polls. The MDC says March is too soon to implement the agreements reached in the inter-party talks aimed at smoothing the way to the elections. Last edited by Oneword; 7th January 2008 at 03:43 PM.
