The Rumble in the Namib

All roads lead to the Windhoek Country Club on Saturday when Namibia’s word champion Paulus “The Hitman” Moses will defend his WBA lightweight title against Takehiro Shimada of Japan.
It will be a historic event - the first time that Namibia will host a world title fight - and judging by ticket sales a full house of about 3 000 fans can be expected at the Country Club on Saturday evening.
It wont be easy as Shimada is an experienced boxer with an impressive record of 23 wins, 4 defeats and 1 draw, but the Hitman is still unbeaten after 24 pro fights and in excellent shape. Both boxers passed a pre-medical checkup on Tuesday while the official weigh in will take place on Friday at 11h00.
The world title fight tops the bill of the “Rumble in the Namib” boxing tournament which sees several other high profile match-ups on the undercard.
In the main supporting bout Betuel “Tyson” Uushona will defend his WBA Pan African welterweight title against Welcome Ntshingila of South Africa. The hard-hitting Uushona is still unbeaten after 17 pro fights while Ntshingila has a record of 16 wins, 8 defeats and 3 draws.
In his last fight in March this year, Ntshingila challenged Chris van Heerden for the South African welterweight title but lost a unanimous points decision over 12 rounds.
Uushona should be favoured to win this one, judging by Ntshingila’s last performance in Namibia when he lost a unanimous points decision against Namibian welterweight champion Ali Nuumbembe in June 2008. Nuumbembe dominated the fight from the start and by the end Ntshingila was a bloody mess. Uushona, of course, beat Nuumbembe to win the Namibian welterweight title in 2004.
In another title fight over 12 rounds Namibia’s Jatoorora “The Sting” Tjingavete will defend his WBO African lightweight title against compatriot Paulus Kapia. Tjingavete has a record of 11 wins and 2 defeats while Kapia has a record of 8 wins and 2 defeats.
In an international junior welterweight fight Namibia’s Sacky “Izinyoka” Shikukutu will take on Ramunzi Khakhathi of South Africa over six rounds. The hard-hitting Shikukutu is still unbeaten after 8 pro fights while Khakhati has a pro record of 4 wins and 7 defeats.
Namibia’s Abmerk “Scorpion” Shindjuu takes on Maurice Mutavhatsindi of South Africa in an international mini flyweight bout over six rounds.
Shindjuu’s record is 5 wins, 2 defeats and 2 draws while Mutavhatsindi’s record is 1 win and 3 defeats.
In a bantamweight fight over 6 rounds, Namibia’s Paulus “The Rock” Ambunda takes on Pfariso Neluvhalani of South Africa. Ambunda is still unbeaten after 6 pro fights while Neluvhalani has a record of 4 wins, 2 defeats and 1 draw.
In a lightweight swinger fight Namibia’s Mandume Pohamba takes on compatriot Julius Indongo over four rounds. Mandume is unbeaten after one pro fight while Indongo makes his pro debut.
