Namibia off to a winning start

Namibia’s U14 girls’ soccer team started off on a high note at the Norway Cup competition when they drew 1-1 against Elverum in a friendly match and then beat Elverum 1-0 in their opening competitive match on Thursday.

According to Namibia’s team manager Jacky Gertze, Namibia were full value for their win while Emma Naris scored Namibia’s goal.

Kaunivi wins National 15km Championships

Edward Kaunivi of Okahandja won the PriceWaterhouseCoopers National 15km championships for the second year in a row in a time of 51 minutes 31 seconds on Saturday morning.

Kaunivi beat veteran Luketz Swartbooi in a sprint to the line, as Swartbooi finished second in 51:35, while Johannes Naitembu came third in 51:44.

Moses remains champion with world-class performance

Paulus “The Hitman” Moses retained his WBA lightweight title when he convincingly beat Takehiro Shimada on points at the Windhoek Country Club on Saturday night. Moses piled up the points with his razor sharp jab and although Shimada gave a brave performance, especially in the close exchanges, Moses was more industrious and had the higher work rate.

Qualifying trampoline competition

Bank Windhoek has partnered with Intendo Gymnastics Club to host the second Qualifying Trampoline and Tumbling Competition, to be hosted on 25 July 2009.

This Qualifying Tournament allows the gymnasts much needed competition and aims to expose the sport to the wider public. Amongst the 47 gymnasts that will be in action this weekend are the well-known Michellé Solomons, Jivanka Kruger and Nicole Visser. These 47 gymnasts hail from four clubs.

The Rumble in the Namib

All roads lead to the Windhoek Country Club on Saturday when Namibia’s word champion Paulus “The Hitman” Moses will defend his WBA lightweight title against Takehiro Shimada of Japan.

It will be a historic event - the first time that Namibia will host a world title fight - and judging by ticket sales a full house of about 3 000 fans can be expected at the Country Club on Saturday evening.

It wont be easy as Shimada is an experienced boxer with an impressive record...
